| MTWRF- Class A Sludge | Sewer | ||||||||
| DESCRIPTION: | |||||||||
| This project could be part of the plant up-grade or be an independent project. The advantage of Class A sludge is that it can be sold in bulk or bagged for customer use. It is sterile and can be applied to lawns and gardens. This would eliminate the high cost of our current disposal methods which is limited to agricultural application and land fill disposal. Class A sludge would also provide greater protection to plant workers from exposure to potential pathogens from aerosols. This currently is a theoretical cost concern not a regulatory requirement, but replacement of the existing process with the Class A process would eliminate potential future regulatory issues. The budgeted cost shown is for investigating and engineering of a design, no construction dollars are included. | |||||||||
| PLANNING JUSTIFICATION: | |||||||||
| The disposal of Class B sludge is very expensive. It can only be used in non-food crop agriculture and disposed of in a land fill. It also requires an extensive permitting process regardless of where it is disposed. The sludge contains excessive moisture, thus we pay for the hauling of the excess water weight. Class A sludge is dry, less than 3% moisture and can be safely used by the general public. | |||||||||
