St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission Provides Assistance to Hurricane Katrina Victims

On Saturday, October 1, 2005 a crew of 2 MetCom employees departed for D’Iberville, Mississippi to assist this small town in repairing and rebuilding their sewer collection system in preparation for temporary housing. D’Iberville suffered complete devastation from Hurricane Katrina.

Before departing, Gary Reynolds, MetCom’s Water and Wastewater Collection Systems Superintendent, and Tom Spalding, Metcom’s Maintenance Superintendent gathered the necessary supplies and equipment they would need to perform their two-part mission: make repairs to D’Iberville’s sewage grinder pump systems and to train the town’s employees on these systems (coincidentally, the town was scheduled to take over their water and sewer systems from a contractor on October 1, 2005).

Gary and Tom arrived in D’Iberville on Sunday, October 2, 2005, and attended an organizational meeting Monday morning before heading to work. The guys are making good progress on troubleshooting and repairing each grinder pump and it’s controls. We are all anxious to visualize the conditions and progress that is being made, unfortunately they do not have e-mail or internet capabilities in the D’Iberville area. We will update this information as we receive updates. They are scheduled to return home on Thursday, October 13th.

The St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission would like to thank our numerous customers, vendors, employees, and friends that have donated supplies, accommodations, and use of tools and equipment during this effort.

Update on Hurricane Katrina Relief

On Tuesday, October 11, 2005, MetCom employees Gary Reynolds and Tom Spalding completed their duties in D’Iberville, Mississippi and prepared for their long trip home. Gary and Tom were part of a small task force that was able to repair and rebuild a large portion of D’Iberville’s sewage grinder pump systems in preparation for temporary housing, and eventual housing rebuilds. Below are some of the conditions faced by our crew and the task force hard at work.
